Primary Link Concept

Primary LinkElfiq’s Layer-2 implementation enables the use of an Elfiq Link Balancer inline through no modifications and a core concept in this approach is the primary link.

The primary link is the ISP link installed and configured with the firewall (or other gateway) prior to the installation of the Elfiq Link Balancer. When inserting the Elfiq unit in the network, the “inside” port will be configured to respond like the original ISP link, so the firewall does not require configuration or rules modification and addition.

The primary link concept is the key behind key features such as LAN Failsafe and SitePathMTPX.

dual primary link elfiqWhen merging two distinct networks onto a single link balancer to utilze all carriers' bandwidth withouth modifying each gagteway, the Elfiq Link Balancer can be set up in "dual primary link" mode as described by the diagram on the right with the greed and red primary links.

In this type of deployment, no gateway has been reconfigured and both primary links are used bot the LAN Failsafe feature so if the Elfiq Link Balancer loses power both gateways are able to reconnect to their respective primary link.

It is also possible to accomodate as many primary links as a site may require.
